Why Walking Sparks Better Ideas — and How to Use It to Solve Problems
Some of the most stubborn problems in your life — the email you can't word right, the business pitch that won't click, the conversation you've been rehearsing for weeks — probably won't be solved at your desk. They'll be solved on a footpath.
That's not a motivational poster. It's a fairly robust finding from a 2014 Stanford study by Marily Oppezzo and Daniel Schwartz, which compared people's creative output while sitting and while walking. The headline number — walking lifted creative output by an average of around 60 per cent compared with sitting — has been repeated so often it risks becoming background noise. But the details of why it works, and the conditions under which it works best, are genuinely useful if you want to think better.
What the Stanford study actually measured
Oppezzo and Schwartz ran four experiments with 176 participants, mostly university students. People were asked to do creative-thinking tasks while either seated indoors, walking on a treadmill facing a blank wall, being pushed in a wheelchair outdoors, or walking outdoors. The main test was a classic measure of divergent thinking — Guilford's Alternative Uses Task, where you generate as many novel uses as possible for an everyday object like a button or a tyre.
The result was striking and consistent: walking, whether on a treadmill or outside, produced significantly more novel and appropriate ideas than sitting. About 81 per cent of participants improved their creative output while walking. Even more interesting, the effect lingered — people who had been walking and then sat down still scored better on the next round than people who'd been sitting the whole time.
What walking didn't help with was convergent thinking — the kind of single-answer, focused problem-solving where you need to home in on one correct solution. On those tasks, walkers actually did slightly worse. That's a really important distinction, and we'll come back to it.
Why movement seems to unlock ideas
The Stanford team were careful not to oversell the mechanism. As Psychology Today's coverage noted, the effect didn't seem to depend on being outdoors or seeing pleasant scenery — treadmill walkers staring at a blank wall got the same creative lift as people strolling through a leafy Stanford campus. That suggests something about the physical act itself, not just the change of scene, is doing the work.
A few plausible ingredients:
- Mild physiological arousal. Walking lifts your heart rate just enough to increase blood flow and oxygenation without taxing your attention. You're alert but not stressed.
- Reduced executive control. When part of your brain is busy with the low-level task of locomotion, the inner editor that polices your ideas seems to relax. Wilder associations get through.
- Diffuse attention. Walking encourages a soft, wandering focus — the same mental mode that produces shower thoughts and pre-sleep insights.
Layered on top of that, when you walk outside, there's a second benefit that the Stanford study deliberately stripped away but plenty of other research has explored. The American Psychological Association's review of "nature" research documents how time in green spaces lowers stress, restores depleted attention, and improves mood — all of which independently help creative thinking. So a walk through a park is essentially two interventions stacked on one.
The catch: walking is great for ideas, not for picking them
The most useful nuance in the Stanford findings — and the one most often missed in the quick summaries — is the split between divergent and convergent thinking. Walking is a tool for generating options. It's not a tool for choosing between them, drafting the final version, or doing the careful, focused work of executing the idea.
If you treat a walk like a brainstorm and your desk like an editor, the two work together. If you try to use a walk to write the final paragraph of a report in your head, you'll probably end up frustrated. This matches what a lot of writers, designers and engineers already know intuitively: you go for a walk when you're stuck, not when you're finishing.
How to actually use this
The science is interesting; the practical takeaway is more interesting. Here's how to translate the research into a working method, whether you're a student in Brisbane, a designer in Melbourne or a small-business owner in regional NSW.
1. Define the problem before you leave
Walks are good at generating, but you have to seed the generator. Spend five minutes before you head out writing down the question you want to crack — "How could we explain this product without using jargon?" or "What are five different ways to start this difficult conversation?" The clearer the prompt, the more useful the wandering.
2. Aim for quantity, not polish
The Stanford task rewarded participants for novel, varied uses — not for the single best one. Treat your walk the same way. Let yourself entertain ideas you'd normally dismiss. Bad ideas often share a postcode with good ones, and you can only sort them later.
3. Capture without breaking the flow
The downside of walking is that you can't easily write. A voice memo on your phone is the simplest fix — talk to yourself, capture half-sentences, don't worry about coherence. Lab Manager's write-up noted that the post-walk creative bump persists for a while, so even if you save the capture for when you sit back down, you'll still benefit.
4. Match the walk to the task
Need wild new ideas? Walk outside, ideally somewhere with trees, water or open sky — the nature effect compounds. Need to untangle something more analytic? A short, brisker walk might help shake off mental fatigue without sending your mind off on a tangent. And if you genuinely need to focus and execute, walking is the wrong tool — sit down.
5. Build it into the week, not just the crisis
One walking experiment won't transform your creative life. The more interesting question is whether you can engineer your week so that walks sit at the front of any new project — before the blank document, before the meeting, before the difficult email. In Australia, where most of us live within reach of a beach, bush track or at least a decent suburban loop, the raw material is already there.
An old idea, finally measured
None of this would surprise Aristotle, who taught while walking, or Charles Dickens, who paced London for hours, or Steve Jobs, famous for his walking meetings. The Stanford work didn't discover walking and creativity — it quantified a connection that thinkers have leaned on for centuries. What's genuinely useful about Oppezzo and Schwartz's experiments is the precision: the kind of thinking walking helps with, the size of the effect, and the fact that it doesn't require a scenic backdrop to work.
So next time you're stuck on something — a sentence, a strategy, a tricky conversation — don't push harder at the screen. Stand up, head out the door, and let your feet do what your desk can't.
