What creatine actually does

Creatine is a compound your body already makes, mostly in the liver and kidneys, and you also get it from red meat and fish. It's stored in cells as phosphocreatine, where it acts as a rapid-recharge battery for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) — the molecule cells burn for energy. When a muscle contracts explosively, phosphocreatine donates a phosphate group to regenerate ATP almost instantly.

The brain runs on the same currency. Despite weighing only about 2% of your body mass, it consumes roughly 20% of your energy. Neurons firing, memories forming, attention holding — all of it costs ATP. The compounds with real evidence tend to share a few features: they're cheap, they target a known biological mechanism, they've been studied for decades, and the claimed effects are modest rather than miraculous. Anything sold with a dramatic before-and-after story and a $90 price tag should trigger suspicion.

Creatine isn't going to cure Alzheimer's, and it isn't going to turn a tired professional into a genius. But as one of the few well-studied supplements with a plausible mechanism, a strong safety record and emerging clinical data in serious neurological disease, it's earned a closer look than the average tub on the shelf. For once, the hype is at least pointing in roughly the right direction.
