You pick a few blocks, walk slowly, and try to identify every device that could be watching, listening or logging you. It sounds nerdy. It is. But it's also one of the most effective ways to understand what "privacy" actually means in a 21st-century city — and the lessons translate directly to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or any Australian CBD.
Why Seattle became the unofficial classroom
Seattle is a useful case study because its surveillance debate has played out in public. The city has wrestled openly with police body cameras, automated licence plate readers (ALPRs), a controversial wireless mesh network that was eventually dismantled, and Amazon's Ring partnerships with local law enforcement. They're owned by different entities, governed by different rules, and often quietly shared with police on request. There is no single "surveillance system" — there's a patchwork that behaves like one.

- ALPR-equipped police vehicles, identifiable by the small forward- and rear-facing cameras above the number plates.
- Private cameras on virtually every retail frontage.

None of this is illegal, and most of it has a defensible purpose: deterring theft, managing traffic, investigating assaults. The point of the walk isn't to be alarmed by any single device. It's to register the cumulative picture — and to ask whether the policy conversation has caught up with the physical reality.
Why this matters beyond the privacy crowd
Surveillance infrastructure shapes what cities feel like to live in, even for people who don't think about it. It influences who gets stopped, which neighbourhoods get policed harder, what data brokers can buy, and how protest movements are mapped. It also creates a centralised attack surface: every camera network is also, eventually, a hacking target, as multiple ransomware incidents against transit agencies and hospitals have shown.

The cameras aren't going away. But the assumption that we should simply not look at them — that surveillance is the kind of thing that happens to other people, in other places — is the part most worth retiring. The infrastructure is already on your street. The least you can do is learn its shapes.
