If Mister 880's bills survived a decade in circulation, it was because hardly anyone really inspects cash. That's why central banks — including the RBA — invest heavily in public education, retail training, and visible design changes when new series are issued. A security feature nobody checks is, functionally, no security feature at all.

Mister 880's story endures because it inverts the usual narrative. Counterfeiting is supposed to be a high-stakes crime against the state. He turned it into a quiet rent-paying side hustle, undone not by metallurgy or ink analysis but by a child playing in a burnt-out apartment.

The forensic infrastructure of modern currency — polymer substrates, micro-optics, colour-shifting inks, embedded threads — exists precisely so that low-effort fakes can no longer slip through unnoticed. But the underlying truth hasn't changed since the 1940s. Money works because we trust it. Every security feature, from a Carson City die marker to the clear window on an Australian $50, is really a tool for keeping that trust intact one transaction at a time.
