Buy a new car in Australia today and you are not just buying a vehicle — you are buying a permanently online computer that happens to have wheels. The 2024 Toyota RAV4 hybrid is a good example. What is actually inside a modern connected car

1. Decide on your method
There are three levels of intervention, in increasing order of permanence:

3. Disconnect the battery first
Always disconnect the 12V battery before touching modules on a hybrid. The high-voltage system is isolated, but the 12V bus still powers airbag and SRS modules, and accidental shorts can be expensive.

Photograph each connector before unplugging it. Keep any removed parts in a labelled bag. This matters for warranty, resale, and your own sanity if you ever need to reinstate the system.

For those who want certainty that the car is not silently transmitting, physically separating the antennas from the modem is the most defensible option — it is cheap, reversible, and verifiable.
The bigger point is that vehicle ownership now includes a digital dimension that did not exist a decade ago. Treating your car the way you treat your laptop or phone — understanding what it collects, deciding what you are comfortable with, and acting on that — is no longer paranoid. It is just informed ownership.
